On behalf of our Board of Directors, members and myself, welcome to Floyd County, Kentucky. We believe our county has a great deal to offer any family or business looking for a place to call home. We are proud of the heritage that has given us love of family, a commitment to succeed and a caring for our mountain home. Culture is wide spread throughout our county and present in many degrees; from the food we eat to the way we speak. The largest part of our culture and heritage is seen through our arts and crafts, which is taught from mother to daughter and from father to son.
Our US Highway 23 has recently been dedicated the "Country Music Highway" because of the music we make. Many famous people have come from these mountains. Loretta Lynn being the most well known, but let's not forget Dwight Yokam and Patty Loveless to name a few. Our music tradition continues with the founding of the Mountain Arts Center, which is more than an entertainment facility for our very own "Kentucky Opry" but a music center for our children to cultivate the art of music.
Education is a top issue in Floyd County. As parents, we want the best for our children. Our schools offer technology and an opportunity to explore the possibilities. It is our goal to develop ways to combine education and real life simulation to assist our children in making sound decisions. Examples of these programs include the Reality Store, Career Exploration, Leadership Challenge, Shadowing and Mentoring. Area colleges provide our students with the next stepping-stone to building a sound education and future.
Business is strong in Floyd County. The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce represents a base of businesses ranging from mom and pop to corporate manufacturers. We work together to strengthen the economic standing of our county for all businesses.
It is true; we do not have city malls or a vast assortment of fast food establishments. What we do have is a quiet, friendly, and informative shop owner who remembers your name and makes you feel like family.
If you are seeking a place safe to raise your children, work with friends and neighbors, and enjoy the mountain life, then Floyd County is the place for you. We look forward to meeting you on our streets.
