City of Martin

City of MartinThe City Of Martin began as a coal mining town in the early twentieth century known as Bucks Branch. Later, in 1913, the name was changed to Smalley after Smalley Crisp, a local landowner. Finally, the town’s name was changed for the last time in 1926, to Martin after the postmaster Martin Van Allen. Martin is commonly known as “home of the Purple Flash” in reference to Martin High School. Currently, Martin is home to the Piarist School, a small private high school as well as Mountain Christian Academy, a private elementary school, and Opportunities Unlimited High School. Also, in the fall, Martin residents and visitors can enjoy the Red, White, and Blue Days Celebration, a celebration honoring our veterans. The City Of Martin has endured many floods over the past 100 years and is currently in a redevelopment process. The Martin Redevelopment Plan provides for a new, flood-safe commercial, residential, public and institutional center on a site near downtown. The redevelopment plan places commercial property in an area with greater visibility and with many site characteristics required by today’s retail businesses and offices. This plan makes the “Town Center” more aesthetically pleasing.

City of Prestonsburg

City of PrestonsburgPrestonsburg was the first town in the Big Sandy Valley and the first county seat in all of Eastern Kentucky. Prestonsburg is strategically located at the hub of five major highways and is known as the Star City Of Eastern Kentucky (as represented by the five pointed star). These highways include US 23 North, US 23 South, KY Route 80, KY Route 3, and KY Route 114 (Mountain Parkway). The star also represents the vast amount of entertainment in Prestonsburg. The Mountain Arts Center is a 1,050 seat theater that showcases local talent as well as national headliners. The Kentucky Opry is our own troupe of talented performers. Jenny Wiley Theatre has been providing "magic under the stars" for decades with its classic broadway-type shows. StoneCrest Championship Golf Course, which is built on a reclaimed mountain top, puts you as close to the stars as you can get. The newest addition to a galaxy of fun is the East Kentucky Science Center with its traveling exhibits, laser shows and 40 foot domed planetarium. Prestonsburg is also home to Jenny Wiley State Resort Park and the Jenny Wiley Pioneer Festival.

City of Wayland

King Kelly ColemanWayland, KY was once a thriving coal community and home of the Wayland High School Wasps. Now the little coal camp of Wayland on right Beaver Creek is little more than a ghost town. Currently memorabilia and other items are on display in the Wayland Community Center, home of the Wayland Historical Society. In a state where the love of basketball is legendary, there are rare heroes who rise to legendary status. Wayland is home to basketball legend King Kelly Coleman, a true member of Kentucky’s basketball royalty, with his record-shattering exploits at both Wayland High and Kentucky Wesleyan. If anyone has felt the “royal” treatment given to basketball stars in Kentucky, it’s “King” Kelly. Former University of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp once described “King” Kelly Coleman as one of the greatest high school players in Kentucky history - an honor he still holds today. The Floyd County native was Kentucky’s first “Mr. Basketball,” setting four state tournament records while playing for the Wasps in the 1956 state tournament.
