Prestonsburg, KY – Disney Institute is bringing its renowned professional development program, the “Disney Keys to Excellence,” to Prestonsburg at the Wilkson-Stumbo Convention Center on September 18, 2008. Sponsored locally by Floyd County Chamber Of Commerce, the full-day event will give area professionals an opportunity to experience the business behind the Disney magic – proven strategies and best practices that are easily adaptable to their organizations.
“This is the only program that Disney Institute brings to the local business community,” said George Aguel, senior vice president for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts who also leads the Disney Institute. “Participants from the Big Sandy area will discover Disney practices that they can incorporate into their own businesses. These strategies and tactics have been proven successful for more than 50 years.”
Disney Institute programs are unique in the world of training. “What makes the Disney learning experience so different and meaningful is that we don’t simply teach theory,” said Aguel. “We give participants an ‘insider’s look’ at business philosophies that have helped Disney to consistently rank as one of the world’s most admired companies and brands. Engaging content is presented in an entertaining fashion and provides participants with tools that can literally transform their organizations.”
The full-day “Disney Keys to Excellence” program is made up of four 90-minute sessions:
• Leadership, Disney Style – Highlights how effective leadership has been the catalyst at Disney to drive employee and customer satisfaction from the Company’s inception to today. Participants discover how Disney leaders exhibit values and behaviors that generate bottom-line results.
• Management, Disney Style – Examines the importance of integrating an organization’s corporate culture into selection, training and care. Participants gain insight into ways Disney fosters a supportive environment that inspires employee pride and ownership.

Celebrating Our Heritage and Heroes
The Annual presentation of the Kentucky Highland Folk Festival is a unique celebration of our heritage and culture initiated in 1964 by Mrs. Edith Fitzgerald James. “Miss Edith” studied music at the Peabody Conservatory and sang with the Baltimore Symphony. Her love of the hills was strong and so she returned to Eastern Kentucky. Her studies served to heighten her appreciation for the music and culture of our area. In order to preserve the music tradition and heritage of Eastern Kentucky and present it to the public, the Kentucky Highland Folk Festival was begun. After “Miss Edith’s” death many wonderful friends, family and volunteers have worked tirelessly to continue the festival.
This year’s festival, to be held on September 19th and 20th, will be two big days of celebration honoring our heritage and heroes (those men and women who have served our country and its’ citizens). It has long been said that the hills of Eastern Kentucky have provided more veterans to fight our nation’s wars than any other region of the United States. The folk festival commemorates this commitment to our country by hosting an ATV/Motorcycle Parade and a recognition ceremony on Saturday, September 20th.
In addition, on Friday, September 19th, schools from across the region are invited to attend the festival from 9:30am to 2:00pm. Scheduled events include demonstrations in clogging, the Virginia reel, Appalachian folk tunes, guitar, banjo, dulcimer, fiddle, basket making, woodcarving, furniture making, painting of gourds, hand blown glass jewelry, quilting, hand crafted dulcimers and chair seat weaving. An antique fire engine and fire fighters from Wheelwright and displays from regional historical societies provides educational opportunities fro regional students and adds a nostalgic touch.
After 2:00pm the festival will open to the general public until 9:00pm. The festival will continue on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00am until 9:00pm. Demonstrations, activities and games for all ages, arts, crafts, great tasting food, a chili cook-off (People’s Choice), a pig roast with all the trimmings and live entertainment on the outside stage will provide hours of family entertainment reminding us of the rich musical heritage we share as Eastern Kentuckians.
So, bring an instrument, come and sing, join the fun on the stage, eat good food, enjoy the arts and crafts or simply sit back and relax. Free Admission!
The 45th presentation of the Kentucky Highland Folk Festival held in the parking lot of the Mountain Arts Center will be the best one yet!
